Description: | In Dhanbad, in the heart of India's coal country, like elsewhere across India, there is widespread telecom coverage and affordable data rates. Yet, amidst this technological abundance, a profound duality exists. While miners toil in the depths of the earth, their families above ground yearn for the bare minimum connection - a simple check in call. Motorola's groundbreaking solution, 'Motorola Deep Connect,' bridges this gap. Through unique id-based frequencies on walkie-talkies, the solution facilitates two-way voice calls to regular 5G phones. Doing this required us to build an audio-only user journey for the walkie talkies from scratch. Each channel was assigned a unique voice identifier that substituted for Caller ID. In addition, voice identifiers were integrated into the audio stream to alert callers in case they accidentally selected the wrong channel and dialled the wrong number. The companion app, installed on the 5G devices, was designed for rural folk who might not be familiar with mobile phones. It was designed in 12 Indian languages, and the call interface was reduced to one simple “Push to talk” button. |
