Description: The 'Megh Santoor,' is a rain-powered musical billboard by Taj Mahal Tea, that celebrates the brand's 40-year legacy in Indian classical music. Combining 'Megh' (rainclouds) with 'Santoor' (an Indian instrument), the billboard plays the Raag Megh Malhaar, a symphony that celebrates the arrival of rain.
For centuries, Maestros have played this Raag, but for the first time ever we let the rain itself perform the Raag - turning the inspiration into the artist. Another interesting thing about Raags is that they give the artists the freedom to improvise and create their own melody.
Traditionally, the Santoor is played by lifting a mallet and striking the strings. To replicate this action for Megh Santoor, inspiration was drawn from the ancient Japanese water fountain, Shishi-Odhishi. Each mallet of Megh Santoor came with a rainwater container and each string was embedded with a note. When rain filled the containers, the mallets were lifted, and the water drained out, causing them to fall and strike the strings, producing musical notes. And the varying intensity of the rains helped create a new rendition, of the Megh Malhar every time it rained.
