Description: Every year, heavy rainfall leads to severe flooding on Mumbai’s streets. Open manholes hidden underneath these streets pose a threat to the lives of commuters. An innovative warning device was developed that alerts passersby about open manhole and notifies the municipality about the open manhole’s geolocation in real-time, enabling them to take prompt action.



An innovative, low-cost warning device connected to a mobile app was fitted within the manhole. The device gets activated once the manhole cover is dislodged. Once activated, the device is pushed up to 5 feet above the surface. LED lights and a loud buzzer alert passersby. The IoT device sends real-time notification about the open manhole’s geolocation via an app specially designed for the Mumbai Municipality.



Flood-hazard mapping tools were used to identify multiple flood-prone areas where the device was installed. The project’s success has also opened up conversations with 5+ municipalities across India. Bengaluru municipality will deploy the device in over 200 locations in phase 2. In December 2022, the Mumbai High Court ordered better surveillance of manhole covers. The device’s open-source blueprint has also been made available to civic bodies worldwide for any municipality to use and help its citizens.
