Description: | Despite heavy rains and a flooded city, Mumbaikars have no choice but to commute for their livelihood. Hidden under waterlogged streets open manholes turn into death traps for the commuters. To improve road safety for them during monsoons, an innovative warning device was designed to be fitted within manholes. TVS partnered with the Mumbai Municipality to make an innovative, low-cost, easily scalable 3D-printed device. All the essential electronics are placed on the top part of the device in a water-tight - IPX6 rated enclosure. Using the principle of buoyancy, the device rises up to 5 feet when a manhole cover is dislodged on a flooded street and alerts passersby. The IoT device automatically sends the geolocation of the open manhole to an app which was specially designed for the Mumbai Municipality enabling them to take prompt action. The project’s success has opened up conversations with 5+ municipalities across India. Bengaluru municipality will deploy the device in over 200 locations in phase 2. In December 2022, the Mumbai High Court ordered better surveillance of manhole covers. The device’s open-source blueprint has been made available to civic bodies worldwide for any municipality to use and help its citizens. |
